Hello Sunshine,

A big one this week at the shop and away from it.

Tuesday night at Make it up club: Warren Burt (solo electronics and sonic devices) Ryan Jewell (US) (solo percusion and electronics) Slawek Janicki (POLAND) (bass) , Quba Janicki (drums) (POLAND), Andy Sugg and Kris Wanders (saxophones), Tom Fryer (guitar)

And then after midnight, especially for those who didn't make it out:This Tuesday on O'Tomorrow, (Midnight til 2 Wednesday morning) Downpat is joined in the studio by Ryan Jewell for very special on-air performance. From Columbus Ohio USA, Ryan Jewell plays percussion for Pink Reason and Psychedelic Horseshit. Long arms flailing all over the kit like a mad muppet one moment, precise and to the point in the next, Ryan is a great rock drummer as well as an experienced improviser, working with percussion and electronics. Performing solo and in collaboration with many.

From his Bio: "Ryan regularly works as a solo performer in the arenas of very quiet free improv and very loud harsh noise, and is often called to play drums for established free jazz musicians, experimental rock bands, and iconoclastic songwriters. His solo playing encompasses the worlds of free-jazz, electroacoustic composition and far-out noise from a drum kit, an oscillator and a selection of bowed and wind instruments and accessories. In addition to being a perpetual traveler of the US, he also toured extensively in Europe. He was invited to perform at such respected international festivals as the SOWIESO 1 festival in Paris, the Kraak Festival in Brussels, the International Noise Conference in Miami, and SXSW in Austin.

On Thursday, Holy Balm (Sydney) play an instore at Sunshine & Grease. Starts early. 5pm!

Also on Thursday, at 730 pm, at Blindside Gallery, Lvl 7 of the Nicholas building, (Corner of Swanston st and Flinders lane)

Dear Bands/Musicians/Soundmakers,Whatismusic festival is presenting a very special large scale event for the 2009 festival - the project is called 50/50. 50 bands in 50 minutes, all set up simultaneously in a single room. Ambitious - yes, crazy - well...yes as well. At the moment we're looking for keen young (and old) go-getters who would like to be a part of the event - if you have gear and a minute's worth of creativity, or even pure derivative hilarity, then we'd like to hear from you!The event will be taking place at the ABC's Iwaki Auditorium Southbank on the 19th of December, and will be recorded and broadcast by Radio National an hour following the gig. A project of such absurd and amusing magnitude has never been attempted on Australian shores, and should prove to be an amazing experience for anyone involved. If you would like to be on the bill, send through a short description of who you are, what you do, and preferably a link to a short soundclip of your work to lloydhoneybrook@gmail.com* and we will endeavour to get back to you ASAP with some more details about locking your group in for the project.Looking very much forward to hearing from you all, and making some ludicrous large-scale history!all the best,Robbie Avenaim & Lloyd Honeybrook*for those of you who don't know Lloyd Honeybrook, he is co-ordinating and assisting the WIM festival with Robbie Avenaim this year, and in charge of the co-ordination for this particular project. Whatisrobbie is still behind the wheel though!

If there's any questions at all, don't hesitate to contact me through here, or I think you've all got my number 0402234548. Thanks heaps dudes, much obliged!

x.Lloyd

So: Tuesday - Make it up Club and O'Tomorrow.

Thur - Holy Balm instore, Blindside sound series.

Fri - Pink Reason instore.

Hope to see you out there.

New Stock and Re-stocks. June.

New stock and re-stock list. June 2009

Undecisive God 'A Vinyl Construction' 7" - $12 Undecisive God's recent experiments with multiple turntables and prepared/broken records come to full fruition here with a release that poses questions both to the use of turntables as instruments and vinyl as a format. The music - crunchy multi-layered improvisations/processes that randomly sample small broken chunks from the original vinyl materials - is itself presented on 7" vinyl, in handmade covers reconstructed from old record covers and broken vinyl shards; each cover is different, individually numbered and an interesting one-off creation in itself. Limited edition of fifty copies from Revolution Records.

Mrs. Rice Corpse CD (Dual Plover) $16 What kind of government would send a lunatic artist,

whose idea of self expression is smashing amplified glass against his face, off to China to become a cultural ambassador? Australia the lucky country of coarse! And that’s’ exactly what happened to Lucas Abela (Justice Yeldham). With under two months in Beijing he formed the pick up band Rice屎Corpse, (named after the Chinese character for shit, 屎 which itself is the combination of two characters "尸" corpse and "米" rice), jammed with them four times (two of which were recorded for the album Mrs Rice) before heading off for a ten city tour of China.
A Trio of glass, drums and piano was in Lucas’s minds ear when he arrived and two completely different musicians came forward to form this unlikely band. First to be recruited for drums was Yang Yang whose antics in his own band Mafeisan has given him the reputation of being the craziest exponent of the normally conservative Beijing scene. His ultra loud out and proud personality is in stark contrast to the mild mannered and brutally shy saxophonist Li Zenghui who came to the project as pianist, cause simply put there were no suitable pianists in the city.

Dave E. & the cool marriage counselors – Searching through Sears 7”(Christmas pet records) $12

Solo tracks of incredible, unique clarity by one-time Electric Eels frontman Dave McManus, stripped of the trappings of a proto-punk band but finding ways to impact a similarly unsteady, leering quality about them. These have been sitting on cassette tapes for close to 30 years, but the statements therein are so complete and timeless that any generation is lucky to have them. “Searching Through Sears” is easily my new favorite song, one which I played six times in a row just now before writing this. Dave plays sax, rhythm guitar and xylophone, singing about the way Cleveland’s suburbs had turned into an unshifting tableau of chain stores and restaurants, and sarcastically “searching for values”throughout these establishments, the xylophone ratcheting up the demented proceedings to an unparalleled, half-insane glee. Side two’s tracks “Love Meant to Die” and “Psychology 101” cover being broken-hearted in similarly bent approaches, with the former nothing more than Dave in the studio at WCSB (or WRUW, I guess), singing these jazzbo lyrics a capella, crime stories about how his woman’s dooming him to the grave. It’s as captivating and terrifying as when I heard this about one year ago in a living room in North Philly, and it’s stuck with me since. McManus wears the tortured, antisocial Ohio genius mantle as well as anyone who’s ever donned it, and is luckily still with us should he choose to tell us more. 500 copies, no info, good luck. Dusted review.

Sweet Movie DVD (Criterion) $46 Dusan Makavejev is like an intellectual Jodorowski. Definitely a king of the European “Out” cinema. Sweet Movie, full of unenlighted lunacy, is not really a film at all. It is a social disease. - Jay Cocks, 1975

Hospitals, Der T.P.K, Castings, Daniel Striped Tiger.

The & Files by Paul Foss (IMA Publications) $20 Modelled after a famed sci-fi TV series, The &-Files gathers a covert body of documents following the long and often controversial career of Art & Text, one of the landmark contemporary art magazines of the 1980s and 1990s. Founded in Melbourne, Australia in 1981 by Paul Taylor (1957–92), who quickly moved to New York to make his mark as an art critic, the magazine became one of a handful of international art magazines that succeeded in capturing the turmoil and passing brilliance of those postmodern years. Narrated through the eyes and ears of its longtime publisher and editor, Paul Foss, The &-Files comprises an open letter, a lengthy interview, two questionnaires, and other commentaries and bibliographies, offering an insider’s account of the extraordinary advantages and pitfalls of publishing an art magazine. Co-published by Whale and Star, Florida.

Hany Armanious - Morphic Resonance Book (IMA publishing) $35 Sydney sculptor Hany Armanious makes formally diverse work, marked by its perverse conflation of opposing values. He morphs high-minded modernist formalism into hippy neo-paganism, confuses Scandanavian modernism with Arabian bazaar kitsch, and short circuits Bauhaus 'intelligent design' with Christian fundamentalist 'intelligent design' and Raelian 'intelligent design'. His work exploits our tendency to make links between things which resemble one another in form, material, function and process. He makes bogus analogies, sometimes with the seriousness of a conspiracy theorist, other times with prankster humour. There is a perversity to his project—sometimes he seems intent on elaborating some 'big picture' cosmology, at other times on scrambling the sensible. His underlying point is, however, phenomenological, pointing to our turns of mind. Our new monograph on Armanious surveys his work over the last decade or so, and features substantial new essays by Robert Leonard and Jason Markou. Jointly published with City Gallery Wellington.

Beep... Crackle... Contemporary Art from the middle of nowhere Book (IMA publishing) $30 Crackle showcases the work of seventeen contemporary Australian artists: James Angus, Kate Benyon, Pat Brassington, A Constructed World, Michael Doolan, Fiona Foley, Marco Fusinato, Simryn Gill, Andrew Hurle, Mathew Jones, Danius Kesminas, Callum Morton, Patricia Piccinini, Tim Silver, Ricky Swallow, Louise Weaver, and Ah Xian. It includes short essays on each artist by Stuart Koop and lots of pictures. Crackle has been supported by a grant from the Besen Foundation.

Chris Marker OWLS AT NOON PRELUDE: The Hollow Men by Adrian Martin and Raymond Bellour Book (IMA publishing) $11 A heavily illustrated study of French filmmaker Chris Marker's portentous video installation Owls at Noon Prelude: The Hollow Men, with essays by Adrian Martin and renowned French film theorist Raymond Bellour.
